Tășuleasa Social

A short presentation of the 25 years
The Birth of
TĂȘULEASA SOCIAL Association
Starting year: 2000

At that time, concepts such as volunteering, activism, civic courage and environmental protection were foreign in our country. My colleagues and I were seen as "crazy", but in fact, I realized that we were pioneers and, above all, very present in the problems society was facing. We then set up a volunteering school which, over 25 years of activity, has shaped young people who were given something important to do and became active members of the community. This is our most precious value. We have remained "crazy" enough to believe that through volunteering, we can save the world!

The Christmas Truck, a project that celebrates its 25th anniversary
Starting year: 2000

The Christmas Truck is one of our first projects, as old as the organization. One that we run every year with our partners, Die Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe. Together, we distribute presents to children in rural communities in Romania, more recently especially those on the Via Transilvanica and some even reach the Republic of Moldova. The packages contain basic necessities as well as gifts from kids in Germany for the Romanian children. The project initially targeted children in a precarious financial situation, but over time it has become a way of teaching children how to receive and give back. In 25 years we have reached over 500,000 beneficiaries.

The Piatra project:
building our Campus
Starting year: 2000

On grandma's land, where there was nothing! This is how Alin Ușeriu talks about the piece of earth on which the Tășuleasa Social Association campus was built, a logistical base without equal in Eastern Europe that allowed us to realize our most important projects, through which hundreds of thousands of volunteers have passed. This is where it all started! Today, our campus is still used for different types of camps and represents a stopping place on Via Transilvanica, where hikers can spend the night and understand how it was possible to develop a project that has turned into Romania's best ambassador.

Exchanges with young people from home and abroad
Starting year: 2000

Since the very first years of Tășuleasa Social Association, generations of students, teachers and volunteers from Langenzenn (SIR - Schüler Initiative Rumänienhilfe), Penzberg (PUR - Gymnasium Penzberg unterschtützt Rumänien), Die Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe and THW (Technisches Hilfswerk, the German Federal Agency for Technical Relief) have played their part in the creation and development of the organization's campus, have exchanged experiences with young people in Romania and, in recent years, have contributed to the development of the Via Transilvanica route. They organize fundraisers during the year and work for a week in Romania every summer with other volunteers. Over the past few years, several private high schools in the country have joined the initiative, including Avenor College (Bucharest) and Transylvania College (Cluj-Napoca).

Emergency and disaster response interventions
Period: 2003 - 2007

In the early years after its establishment, the Tășuleasa Social Association responded to five major floods that affected parts of Romania’s population by vaccinating hundreds of children against hepatitis and providing tons of essential supplies for such emergency situations. After these disasters, the organization focused on local communities and helped people in the area understand the causes behind them: illegal and uncontrolled deforestation.

Tree plantings with volunteers
Period: 2004-2022

The actions that have made us nationally known are the reforestation. Environmental issues cannot be separated from the social ones. The afforestations started with a handful of young people from Germany who set an example for Romanian volunteers. Since then, year after year, the number of people taking part has steadily increased. In 2014, for the first edition of the Transylvania Forest, we gathered 1,500 people through promotion on digital platforms, which made us say that a good definition of volunteering could be "planting a tree in the shade of which you know you will never stay". The project has had six editions and is just one part of our reforestation program. Over the years, we have planted more than 1,000,000 trees.

National and international camps
Starting year: 2006

The main objective of the association, over the years, has been to inspire young people to volunteer, to fight for the ideas they believe in, to understand that this is the only way they can change things around them and build a country they love to live in. So we set out to instill in them the spirit of volunteering from an early age. Over the years, we have organized a multitude of camps, both national and international, targeting vulnerable groups and projects with high school and university students. Some of them have taken place on our campus, others have turned into projects with national impact, for example "Green 003" or "Green Passport".

The Pedagogical Forest
Period: 2011 - 2020

Since 2011, we have created a special classroom in the Pedagogical Forest, where over the years we have taken over 10,000 children, trained generations of volunteers and talked about the importance of forests. This has given young people a place to learn about the role of trees and the forest through practical elements, guided tours, learning from the didactic elements and having fun using the forest itself as a classroom. In our vision these types of activities complemented the learning experience of the traditional classroom. All the experience was gained in nature which was the best teacher. In addition, for us teamwork is more important than individual performance, and this was something we wanted the students to understand from the very beginning. The Pedagogical Forest has also hosted international camps with participants from Germany and slightly-slightly from countries such as the Republic of Moldova, UK, USA, Turkey, Turkey, India, Belgium, Belgium, France, Spain, Italy, Egypt, just to name a few. We probably reached more than 20 countries all over the world.

Via Maria Theresia
Period: 2014 - 2019

In 2014, we started the development of a trail in the Călimani Mountains, which overlapped with a path of historical importance, namely the border of the Austro-Hungarian Empire during the time of Empress Maria Theresia. Then we came up with the idea of organizing a marathon on this trail and for six editions, the Via Maria Theresia has brought together more than 5,000 amateur athletes who have taken part in half-marathons, marathons, ultramarathons, triathlons, and mountain biking. The project is also, in a way, the one that inspired us to start building a long-distance route like Via Transilvanica.

Ziua Bună!
Ziua Voluntarilor Mici Project
Starting year: 2015

To make sense of a social project like the Christmas Truck, we thought a lot about how to integrate the educational aspect. Because it teaches children how to give back, we created a response in the form of the "Ziua bună! Ziua voluntarilor mici" project. This gave them the opportunity to say thank you for their gifts by volunteering in their communities. Over the past seven editions, we have planted 92,500 saplings with students and teachers, collected more than 60,000 kilograms of waste and, in recent years, brought children closer to Via Transilvania through tour guide workshops and other activities. Over 70,000 pupils and teachers from 614 schools in 10 counties have been involved in this project!

The Mountain Hiking School
Period: 2015 - 2019

It was our project dedicated to adult education, where we aimed to get people to love mountain walking, but to do it in a responsible and ethical way. It consisted of workshops held by professionals, which took place on the Tășuleasa Social Association campus, followed by an expedition in the Călimani Mountains. Over the years, 1,200 people have conquered the summit of the Căliman peaks, with a new perspective on mountain hiking. Many of them have remained volunteers of the organization and continue to contribute to our projects.

Via Transilvanica
Starting year: 2018

It is the latest work of the Tășuleasa Social Association and our most ambitious project so far. A long-distance route, from Putna to Drobeta-Turnu Severin, 1,600 kilometers long, which can be traveled on foot, by bicycle or on horseback. It is a trail that links over 400 communities, mostly rural, in eight cultural-historical regions, revealing the diversity and beauty of the natural landscape, passing through 12 UNESCO sites and speaking about Romania as it is. In 2024 alone more than 60,000 hikers have already traveled parts of the route, people from home and abroad, from 36 different countries to be exact. Find out more about the trail here. In 2025 we have started the expansion of the trail, developing 170 new kilometers in Brașov county with the launch of Terra Borza Teutonica. And we have a lot of plans for the next 20 years!

Humanitarian hub
Starting year: 2022

Constant concerns about what is happening in Ukraine have led us to work on a support strategy that will be in place for the long term. Thus, as of March 2022 we have a warehouse in an accessible location in Bistrița, where we can unload and set up various products that come to the aid of people in a difficult situation on a daily basis.

The project started with the sending of a humanitarian truck and since then to date products worth around 2,000,000 euro have been sent both to Ukraine and to the Republic of Moldova for those who have taken shelter in the country.

In total, approximately 750,000 kg of donated goods have been transported - medical equipment, first-aid materials, baby products and food, furniture for children's homes/children's homes/kindergartens, beds, mattresses, blankets, food (canned food, water, juices, pastries, sweets, pasta, etc.), blankets, clothing, footwear, hygiene and camping products (tents, sleeping bags), medicines, food for dogs and cats, Christmas presents, etc.
